Spooky Cinema 2018

Ladies & Gents, in honor of this spookiest of months, we are opening our home to enjoy some scary movies together! Every Friday this month (with the possible exception of the 26th), we'll be watching our way through a carefully curated list of horror movies. Feel free to come on over any time between 8 and 9, but the film will start at 9pm sharp and we will be turning away guests once we start.

We'll be making popcorn and providing some beer, but feel free to bring something to share. Oh, and our seating is pretty limited, so advance RSVPs are appreciated so we can invite more people if we have extra space.

The Shining (1980)

Friday, October 5 · 9:00 PM

The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a horror classic and my personal favorite horror movie. A long, winding road leads a family to an isolated hotel in the mountains. The husband hopes to get a job as the sole caretaker for The Overlook Hotel during its winter closure. He is tense, his wife is worried about their son, and their son is experiencing seizures related to his imaginary friend Tony, who lives inside his mouth.

They think the hotel will help them grow closer as a family away from the stresses of the outside world. They are wrong.

The Fly (1986)

Friday, October 12 · 9:00 PM

*The Fly *is not for the squeamish. We follow scientist Seth Brundle as finishes work on his teleportation device. During testing, a housefly enters the teleporter with him, leading to unintended consequences. This body-horror classic comes from director David Cronenberg, who has created several of the most disturbing horrors movies of the last half-century. In The Fly, he produces some of the grossest practical effects you'll ever see on screen.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Friday, October 19 · 10:00 PM

I hear this one is spooky and we need at least one movie for folks who don't want to be too scared, so let's watch The Conjuring 2! I like Vera Farmiga, she was pretty darn good in The Departed. Patrick Wilson is...fine. So let's watch them hunt ghosts? Based on real people I guess.

The VVitch (2015)

Tuesday, October 30 · 7:00 PM

Our final film comes from director Robert Eggers, who is known for period horror films with a bleak sensibility. A slow-burn, The Witch focuses on creating a realistic interpretation of a European family's homestead in 1630s Massachusetts, and less on jump-scares or gore. When unexplained things start happening around their farm, the religious family suspects evil forces living in the surrounding woods. In her first starring role in a major film, Anya Taylor-Joy plays the eldest daughter who the family starts to suspect is a witch. As bad things continue to happen, what will her parents' religious fervor cause them to do? And is she, maybe, really a witch?
