Modern Black & White Series

For this Cinema Series, we'll be screening four modern films, all shot in Black & White. Since the mid 1960s, a majority of major movie releases have been shot in color. This style obviously more closely represents reality, but black & white films are still occasionally shot to help provide a certain style or tone. In this series, we honor those films that carry on the tradition of black & white filming, with movies that range from silly to tragic.

Much Ado About Nothing (2013)

Thursday, April 12 · 6:00 PM

Our Modern Black & White series begins with a modern reimagining of Much Ado About Nothing, written and directed by Joss Whedon. While you will need to keep up with the early modern English left intact from the original Shakespeare play, the light tone and charm of the main cast will keep a smile on your face. Don't miss out on the opening night of this exclusive four week series, covering everything from comedy to tragedy, action to romance. Come for the films, stay for the good company and snacks!

The Party (2017)

Wednesday, April 18 · 6:00 PM

A dark comedy of personal relationships and politics set in the modern day London home of an upper class family.

Roma (2018)

Monday, May 7 · 6:00 PM

This beautifully shot film takes us to 1970s Mexico, where a pair of domestic workers help an upper class family while the father is away. From director Alfonso Cuarón, director of Children of Men and Y Tu Mamá También, Roma is another queit, personal film from one of Mexico's best modern directors.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Black & Chrome (2016)

Tuesday, June 12 · 6:00 PM

We will be concluding our series of modern black & white films this season with a showing of Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome. Supposedly George Miller's preferred version of the film, it'll be interesting to see how different the movie feels without the manic, vibrant colors of the original release.
